“～に基づいて" is used to mean “when making a decision or taking an action based on certain criteria or grounds."
A similar pattern is “～を基に," which means “using something as material or a basis."
The difference between these two patterns can be somewhat confusing, so let’s use examples to clarify.
**"～に基づいて"**
– “法に基づいて裁判が行われる。" (The trial is conducted based on the law.)
– “成績に基づいてクラスを分けます。" (Classes are divided based on grades.)
– “会社の規則に基づいて給料の額が決まります。" (The salary amount is determined based on company regulations.)
**"～を基に"**
– “この映画は事実を基に作られた。" (This movie was made based on facts.)
– “お客様からの意見を基に商品を作りました。" (We made the product based on customer feedback.)
– “この椅子は木を基に作られている。" (This chair is made from wood.)
These examples show how “～に基づいて" is used for decisions or actions based on criteria, while “～を基に" is used for making something using materials or as a basis.
