This time, we are focusing on the expression “～やら～やら."
This sentence pattern has many similar ones like “～とか～とか" and “～だの～だの," so let’s proceed with the lesson while paying attention to the differences.
The three common points are that they function to give examples from many things, but:
– “～や～など" … Only nouns
– “～たり～たり" … Only verbs
– “～やら～やら" … ① Used in a parallel meaning (negative elements or complex emotions)
– “～とか～とか" … Used in a parallel meaning (no particular emotions)
– “～だの～だの" … Used in a parallel meaning but includes the speaker’s dissatisfaction or criticism
Additionally, “～やら～やら" is also used when emotions or thoughts are not organized.
Examples of its usage include:
– “彼に振られて悔しいやら悲しいやら、最悪な一日だった。" (Being dumped by him, I felt frustrated and sad; it was the worst day.)
– “娘が結婚して、嬉しいやら、悲しいやら、複雑な気持ちだった。" (My daughter got married, and I felt happy and sad; it was a complex feeling.)
These sentences demonstrate how “～やら～やら" can be used.
